Poll: 50% Disapprove of Tea Party in Michigan, 34% Approve,
Democratic Disapproval at 80%

Lansing, Mich. – According to a statewide poll conducted by Marketing Resource Group (MRG) and Mitchell Research and Communications, 50 percent of all Michigan registered voters disapprove of the Tea Party with 37 percent strongly disapproving. Approval of the Tea Party stands at 34 percent with 20 percent strongly approving.

“The strongest support for the Tea Party comes mainly from self-identified Republicans. While 68 percent of Republicans approve of the Tea Party, only 27 percent strongly approve. Tea Party candidates are certainly not guaranteed success in GOP primaries with only one quarter of the GOP base strongly supporting the Tea Party,” said Tom Shields, president of MRG.

The poll also showed 52.5 percent of self-identified Independent voters disapproved of the Tea Party while 31.3 percent approved.

Steve Mitchell, chairman of Mitchell Research and Communications said, “As a result of the Tea Party’s strong stands on issues like the government shutdown, it has continued to slide in popularity among voters, including Independents. Successful Tea Party candidates in GOP primaries will need to work very hard to win over ticket-splitters in the general election.”
