Voters Overwhelmingly Reject Proposed IRS Account Sharing Policy
LANSING, Mich. – Michigan voters overwhelmingly oppose President Biden’s plan to share individual bank account information with the IRS. In a recent MRG-commissioned Michigan Poll, 82% of respondents oppose the president’s plan with 73% strongly opposing. Only 14% support the proposed policy.
“Across all political spectrums and demographics, Michigan voters are not interested in providing their personal financial data to the IRS,” said Tom Shields, Senior Advisor of MRG, LLC. “Michigan voters see this as a clear overreach by the government that could become a campaign issue if passed.”
The Question and Result
Q. As part of President Biden’s Build Back Better Plan, financial institutions would be required to provide the IRS with data on individual bank accounts with over $600 in inflow or outflow transactions on an annual basis. Do you support or oppose the policy to have financial institutions share account information with the IRS? [IF SUPPORT / OPPOSE, ASK:] Would that be strongly (support / oppose) or just somewhat (support / oppose)?

MRG Michigan Poll® Fall 2021
The survey of 602 likely Michigan voters was conducted by live interview October 18-24, 2021 with a +4 Dem sample. The sample was randomly drawn from a listed sample of all registered voters with a history of voting and stratified by city and township to reflect voter turnout. Quotas for gender and cell phone interviews were met within each geographic area, and extra efforts were made to reach African Americans. Fifty percent of the interviews were conducted with cell phone only or cell phone dominant households. Some columns may not add up to 100% because of rounding. Individual rounding may impact final totals. This survey yields a sampling margin of error of ±4 percent with a 95 percent confidence interval. The sampling margin of error for subgroups may be higher depending on the size of the subgroup.
