LANSING, Mich. – A temporary gas tax holiday is supported by 61% of Michigan voters, according to the recently commissioned Michigan Poll® conducted by Marketing Resource Group (MRG). Republicans are the most likely to support a gas tax holiday at 72%. Support increases with age, from 50% of those aged 18-34 to 71% of people over 65.
When asked if they’d be more likely to vote for a candidate that supports a temporary gas tax holiday, 50% of voters agreed. This is consistent for both Republicans at 54% and Democrats at 52%. Independents at 43% are less likely to hold that view. Support is consistent across geographic regions of the state, with an average of 51% more likely to vote for the candidate; the highest support comes from the city of Detroit and the Upper Peninsula at 58%.
“The gas tax holiday is widely supported across the state of Michigan,” said Jenell Leonard, Owner of MRG. “Pain at the pump will surely play a role in this year's elections, with half of the electorate more likely to cast their ballot for a candidate that supports a statewide gas tax holiday to ease the strain on Michigan families.”
Q. As you may know, Michigan currently has a state gas tax of 52.4 cents per gallon, which helps pay for roads and bridges across the state. There has been some debate about whether Michigan should temporarily suspend the gas tax to give drivers some relief.
Would you support or oppose a temporary gas tax holiday that would suspend Michigan’s state gas tax for a period of time?

Q. Now, suppose a candidate for governor supported a temporary gas tax holiday that would suspend Michigan’s state gas tax for a period of time.
Would that make you more likely or less likely to vote for that candidate, or would it not make much difference?

MRG Michigan Poll® Fall 2026
The survey of 1008 \ likely Michigan voters was conducted by Quantitative CAWI (Computer Administered Web Interviewing) survey through an online panel from October 9-14, 2026. Quotas for gender, age and race/ethnicity were met within each geographic area. Some columns or results may not add up to 100% because of rounding. Individual rounding may impact final totals. This survey yields a sampling margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points with a 95 percent confidence interval. The sampling margin of error for subgroups may be higher depending on the size of the subgroup.
